No matter what kind of holiday you like, from the relaxed to the thrill seeking, deciding the perfect destination for your break can be a challenge. For those looking for an island break, comparing Cape Verde and the Canary Islands can be a lengthy, and tiresome part of vacation planning.

In this article, we will compare both destinations in some crucial factors that are a priority to many holiday goers.

Le isole

Before we mention anything else, we should discuss the islands themselves, or rather the islands that make up these destinations.

Capo Verde

Cape Verde is an archipelago with nine inhabited islands, all with unique traits to appeal to a range of travellers. From lush mountainous landscapes, perfect for avid hikers, to quiet open beaches that offer a serene break for sunbathers.

Located off of the African coast, Cape Verde experiences year round pleasant temperatures, making it a great option for both a summer break, or a winter sun holiday.

The Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are the most southern region of Spain, and is made up of seven islands, ranging from tourist hotspots, to scenic breaks. Boasting natural features such as spanning beaches and active volcanoes, the Canary Islands offer a unique break for many travellers.

Located to the Northwest of the African continent, the Canary Islands give holiday goers a break with all round nice temperature and scenery to match.

Meteo e clima

Generally speaking, out of the two islands, Cape Verde is hotter year round due to it being closer to the Earth’s equator. Cape Verde is overall better for travellers seeking reliably warm weather, whereas the Canary Islands are better for holiday goers looking for less intense heat during the summer months.

Cape Verde’s Weather

Temperatura: Generally hotter year round, with winter peaks of 25℃ and summer peaks of 30℃.

Winter: For the months spanning from November to March, travellers can expect temperatures of up to 25℃. This is also the driest season of the year, and is ideal for anyone looking for a beach break.

Summer: In the months of Giugno, July, Auguste September, you can expect to experience temperate weather. However, the summer months are also Cape Verde’s rainy season, so if you do travel then, expect a couple of showers.

Canary Island’s Weather

Temperatura: Overall, the Canary Islands experience much more mild temperatures year round.

Winter: For the winter months, spanning from November through till March, travellers visiting the Canary Islands can expect pleasant daytime climates, with highs of approximately 22℃.

Summer: During summer months, the Canaries experience generally dry weather, with a pleasant temperature reaching the higher 20℃.

Tempo di viaggio

One of the biggest differences between Cape Verde and the Canary Islands is how far away they are.

If you are travelling from a UK airport to Cape Verde, you can expect an approximate flight time of 6 hours, with the possible need of interisland travel depending on where you have chosen to stay. Travelling from the same UK airport to a Canary Island destination, you could expect to fly for around 4.5 hours, with coach transfers upon arrival.

Getting Around

When visiting the Canary Islands, while travelling between islands is possible by ferry, it is not advisable due to long travel times. This means that for many, the island you choose to stay on is the island you have to stay on for your whole trip.

Comparing this to Cape Verde, interisland travel is much more achievable. With regular ferry and small flight services between the Cape Verde islands, seeing as much of the archipelago as possible is simple.

Things to do

On both sets of islands, there are a range of cose da fare that travellers of all kinds can explore, no matter the time of year.

Both Cape Verde and the Canary Islands boast coastlines that are great for water sports, volcanic mountains for exploring, and hiking trails to help you find scenic viewpoints. The main difference you may notice when comparing things to do in both destinations, is the weather conditions you can expect.

For example, if you’re wanting to look at getting the most time in the sea, for swimming, water sports, or otherwise, you should compare the weather conditions of both places to get a better idea of where to go. If you’re looking for a cooler climate, visit the Canaries, but if you want a warmer sea temperature, then choose Cape Verde.
